My Not-So-Secret Addiction

Someone needs to save me from myself, y'all.  If you've been lurking around here for a long, long time (like - years), then you already know that I might possibly have a tiny obsession about something so cliche, it's embarrassing to admit to.  Which is why you wouldn't know about it if you haven't been a long-time reader.  Really, I hang my head in shame whenever I think of it, which is why I don't talk about it all that often.

Yes, y'all, my name is Tonggu Momma, and I am addicted to...
Panda bears.

I know, I know.  How cliche can one possibly be?  There should be a rule that states one cannot adopt a child from China if one insists on collecting All Things Panda.  At least I have the small consolation of knowing that the obsession began long ago, before the thought of adopting from China even entered my puny little mind.  But once we traveled to China to adopt the Tongginator... well, y'all... I morphed from panda lover to panda obsessed. Case in point.  And - ahem - another case in point.

(I'm so mortified.)

(But I can't seem to stop myself.)

Someone needs to stop me.  The Husband is out of town again for work - four weeks in a row of travel, thank you very much - and he is therefore unable to control my actions.  One of y'all needs to stop me.

Cuz I found this.

In a catalog.  Which means I was totally minding my own business, completely in recovery from all things panda.  But then this came in the mail.  It landed on! my! doorstep! and now it's whispering to me - constantly - saying "buy me, TM!  Buy me!"

I am so totally in love.  It's a fan!  It's a panda!  It's a PANDA FAN!  Never mind that it's practically $100... it has two speeds.  And it's a panda!  And a fan!  And I, too, am a panda fan!

(I am so pathetic.)

(Someone please stop me.)

Heres the thing, it's gonna break. It's gonna break fast. All the money went into the aesthetics and none into the mechanics and it's gonna be a sad excuse for a fan and then break and you'll have spent almost $100 on it and you'll be irritated with yourself for buying it and irritated with it for breaking and you don't need to spend $100 for that-- you're the mother of two children: you can be irritated with yourself and some(one)thing else for free pretty much any day of the week.

Also, my husband collects hippos. We live with some of the most hideous, ridiculous hippo junk imaginable (I get to say that because I bought most of it for him as gifts). Learn from my mistakes-- wait for the really, truly, miraculously special pandas and get those. It might be one or two a year. There may be a year when you don't find a single one. But when you do-- oh how it was worth the wait! And because you didn't spend almost $100 on a panda fan, you can indulge in the truly special panda guilt free and thoroughly enjoy your purchase.

Also, your husband will thank you for not making him live with the panda fan.

And it's scary. The fan blades as it's tummy is just kid-of creepy to look at. You will traumatize those dear girls and they will grow up fearing all things panda.

(Did that help?!?)

What's the name of the catalog and I'll buy it so you can't! ;)

Oh, my gosh! I saw it yesterday too and earmarked the page with the thought of buying it for your birthday. And then I thought, "Would she really like this or only put on her polite smile when she opened it?" Now I know and guess what you're getting for your birthday????

Hahahaha. I am with Aus. It's funny and cute and I say let Tonggu Grammy give it to you for your b'day :)

You aren't pathetic. It's cute. My obsessions apparently aren't enough for daily life, they are now taking over my dream life. My post today is my weird dream.....

Funny thing is - i had a dream about Pandas last night. Stuffed toy pandas and panda bikes!! LOL

Remember: It is more fun to look at things and want them, than to have them. Because once you have them, you can't look and want any more!

You can never have too many pandas! That would then confirm my husband's feelings that you can have too polar bears, and I know for a fact that one can never have too many polar bears.

Just saying...

I used to collect something-- a different animal--when I was in high school and college. People used to give me this animal in all sizes and shapes as gifts for every occasion. It was fun for a while. It was cute for a while. But after a few years I sort of got tired of people "knowing me" for that particular animal. It wasn't so much fun any more.

I totally understand the collecting urge. Totally get it. I guess I just hit my limit before you did. But I agree with the lady who said the $100 dollar fan will probably break quickly. They're banking on the cute factor of the panda for you to overspend on the fan. Besides, I'm going to bet you have central air. What do you need a fan for???? Why not just frame the photo? :-)

It's cute but probably not well made. For that amount, there are some really good bladeless fans available. Think about it from a safety perspective - a cute panda bear with blades in its tummy just enticing precious little fingers to touch.

Just a thought!

I am fully aware of this addiction because my 3 year old has it, too, and I? I am an enabler. We have 13 long sleeve panda shirts, 15 short sleeve panda shirts (in her current size, mind you), panda leggings, panda hats, panda shoes, panda skirts and panda dresses from etsy. We have a panda camping chair, panda thermometer, panda backpack, panda purses, a panda garden in a container pot with mini-pandas and bamboo. We have stuffed pandas, plastic panda figurines, panda sunglasses, panda rain boots, and a panda swimsuit. And it's not just me. Her extended family has contributed as well. Even SANTA brought her a stuffed panda that sitting is STILL taller that she is. TOTALLY out of my control. :)

And I'm with you. The panda fan ROCKS. It's not YOUR fault that it popped up while you were innocently reading a magazine. :)

Just stay away from ebay. You might or might not find a speaker panda that plugs into ipods.

That's all I'm saying about that. :)

Karrie (runaway panda fan)

Here's my attempt, TM:

The patented, much-like-TM-death-glare, Anne withering comment:

That is SO. LAME. Lame! Lame. I will come to your home and scoff at it. SCOFF.

Does that help? =) No? Well, in that case, it'll probably short circuit and burn your house down. Yes? No? *Sigh* I'm tryin' here. Recovery is hard work, TM.

=)

That's ok, Momma...

World of Warcraft (an online game) is releasing a new expansion called "Mists of Pandaria". Which includes pandas as a playable character. The panda obsession in the gaming community has gone through the roof. :)

My mouth is gaping open because just last week while furniture buying w/my 22yr old, we saw a fan JUST LIKE THAT but only one was a dog and the other was a Rooster!! TOTALLY CUTE!! It was 69.00 in the furniture store here!! I asked the sales associate about it and he said "well, it's cute but if you want it to keep cool...I would say DON'T BUY it...if you are buying it as a novelty I would say "cute...but just don't buy it"! LOL!! I had to laugh b/c I'm sure he worked on sales commission! Hmmmm maybe he was banking on us buying that expensive bedroom suite instead of walking out w/a 70buck novelty fan!!! It still was adorable though!! If you have a HOME FURNITURE in your area, stop in and see if it available.

Target has divided plates in the $1 spot with pandas on them. I know this because one came home with me this morning. ;)

Go to the San Diego Zoo and after walking through the Panda exhibit, these photographers pop out of nowhere and take your group's photograph. They give you a card with a number on it and you can access the photograph when you get home. Miracously (I know, technology) all the children in the photo are holding baby pandas and there are two adult pandas also hanging out in the photograph. It really is cute and they did an amazing job on my family of 8.

As the mother of a panda obsessed child, I now love them too. So, I have an important question... Have you seen a panda bike helmet? Not one with pandas painted on, but that looks like a panda head with ears and everything. I want it for my panda-girl, like you want that panda fan.
