On The Chart

So my log-in date finally made it onto the Rumor Queen's chart, y'all.

her guess as to who will receive referrals when, based on past statistics

Which means we quite probably will receive a referral sometime this winter. Which means we might actually become parents again, after all of this time. And that means the Tongginator will finally become a big sister, after years of dreaming about a mei mei. A sister. A sissy.

After over four years of waiting, it almost feels surreal.

I needed something to make it feel real. I needed to do something tangible, but I didn't know what. And then I saw it... something absolutely ridiculous, sitting with an over-priced sales tag on a shelf in an over-priced store. Despite the best of intentions, I fell in love with it. And I kinda figure - after over four years of waiting - that it's okay to buy something ridiculous about now.

Y'all know me. I am ever practical. And I have this weird guilt complex about over-consumerism and shopping and such. Plus, I have absolutely no fashion sense, so I usually freeze with fear at the thought of purchasing something with *gasp* an actual pattern. But what can I say except that I fell in love? Not because it's gorgeous. (Although it totally is.) And not because it's a brand-name. (Because I didn't even know how hoity it was until the salesclerk told me.) But because, by purchasing it, I told myself and everyone around me that yes, this IS going to happen for us.

Y'all... I bought a diaper bag.

And a fancy one at that.

I would never have bought it without seeing our date on that little chart. And I definitely would not have done it without seeing a referral happen this month for my good friend Lisa. But I think I finally might possibly believe that this next adoption is going to happen. As ridiculous as it sounds, I bought that outrageously over-priced bag to prove to myself that I WILL be a mom again. Because I could fritter away $40 for sure... toss it on the counter and tell myself, "well, if it doesn't happen, I only wasted forty bucks." Or sixty. Or whatever.

But this beauty? Buying this beauty says to everyone... it says to myself... that our next adoption WILL happen. I will become a mom again. And the Tongginator will finally be able to call someone "sissy."

But only if I get off my duff and start renewing our immigration paperwork and updating our homestudy.

For the FOURTH time.

There is something about seeing your date on that chart, isn't there? I got excited and then remembered that I haven't even met you yet (to be remedied on my next trip to visit my father-in-law...)!
Congratulations, and I'm so happy that you let your heart believe it now. I still remember my first purchase for each of my kids when I finally believed it was real that they'd come home!

Bag is way cool!

LOVE seeing the date on the chart and LOVE seeing the bag. It is darling. I think I might have fallen in love too- and I'm also one that would usually go for "tan". :) Congrats on making RQ's chart and for things to come...... :)

that's awesome! Sometimes it takes something tangible to make it seem really real!
Congratulations!

Woohoo! And what an awesome bag it is. I shall vicariously feel the joy as you tote that beautiful thing around. And know what? I wouldn't care if it had cost $100. You're on the chart!!!!!! We travel this winter to meet your precious daughter and my new granddaughter!

Yay!!!
I am SO excited for you TM!! I wish I could have been with you shopping when you bought your adorable and ridiculously overpriced diaper bag because that represents such a leap of faith for you....
Your daughter is COMING!!!

Alright! Very, very excited for you - T will be a fabulous big sister. Her fashion advice will be bar none!

Those first purchases are soo special. Not only are they a great reminder that your child is coming, but later they are a great reminder of the hope, joy and excitement you had at the thought of your child's arrival.

As soon as I saw Rumor Queen's latest chart, I had to come back to your blog to check and see if you'd made it on, and did a happy dance for your when I saw your LID was 6/13/06.

During our first adoption our wait was much much longer than anticipated. Nothing like the four years for y'all, but it felt like it wasn't going to happen, too. I plunged into retail therapy. Somehow, shopping for things like this diaper bag is an affirmation to ourselves that this really is going to happen.

LOVE that bag!!!

Marla said...

Woohoo! For getting on the chart and for buying that gorgeous bag! So happy your wait is down to months now instead of years.

Sherri said...

Oh, I am so happy for you. And I know how huge this is for you to feel that this is actually going to happen.

Congratulations for being on the chart.

Oooooh, I love me some Petunia Picklebottom! How does Tonguu Daddy feel about that bag? :) We have a Diaper Dude if he is looking for something a little more masculine.

How exciting! Nothing like a new bag to celebrate any event, but especially THIS event!!!

Be blessed... and get your paperwork finished!

Making the chart is worth celebrating! That lovely diaper bag is worth splurging over. I cannot wait to follow y'all's travel blog (you will blog won't you?).

Yay! The bag is beautiful and I can't wait to read more about the process since I wasn't around when you were adopting LT.

Had to swing by and congratulate you on making the chart!!! What a great thing to finally see.

Love the bag by the way!!!

that little chart blows my mind... especially since I'm seeing our LID on there from way back in 2006!

That is a gorgeous bag my friend!

Gorgeous choice of a bag, my friend! And yes, you DESERVE it!! I mean, come on, this has been one seriously looooooooooooong wait!

Can't wait to see the T as a big S!!

Kim said...

Good for you - an act of faith that this adoption WILL happen.

Get thee to USCIS... Lord willing, this is the LAST time. (We just renewed for our 2nd last week... don't want to think about 2 more...)

Great *gasp* pattern choice, too, by the way!

Carla said...

You WILL get that referral this year. :) And Petunia Picklebottom? GREAT choice, I learned about them AFTER I spent over $40 on a Lands End diaper bag and Dh told me NO WAY did I need another diaper bag. *sob*

and in my world, since this ONE diaper bag will last you a few years at least, the cheap ones would only last one or so...so in the end it cost the same. LOL Right?!

and Congratulations for being ON THE CHART!!!!!

Oh, how happy this makes me for you! And as you trudge through yet another update, remember that at least it's not the new system - I have a friend who has put off another adoption b/c the LIST of things she'd need to do exhausts her (she has lived in several countries since she turned 18). Nice bag!

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! I love the pattern and the colour. I'm a huge fan of brown.

Congratulations.

BTW - can you explain or point me to a place to explain this waiting chart? I have looked on Rumor Queen's site but still find myself confused as to the process. (and no I am not adopting from China - just curious as to how the process(chart) works.

Congratulations! And the bag is gorgeous. I can't even imagine waiting 4 years. We've just been approved to adopt from foster care and are thinking it will be a few months of waiting. Maybe we'll be blogging together about our new daughters this winter.

I love the diaper bag! And I love your attitude and thought process. It's the sort of thing I would do in a similar situation, I think.

I got tears in my eyes reading this. I so hope and pray that your baby will be coming home this year. And sooner rather than later! You are such a good mom and I know that T will be an awesome big sister!

This IS going to happen. I have no doubt.
I have no clue what that chart thing is all about, but if it's good I'm glad for you :)

And that bag is fabulous!! I love it. I'm the same as you when it comes to shopping and bying things, but I immidiately wanted that bag when I saw the picture. And I don't even have kids! I love that pattern.
And why shouldn't you celebrate and be exited? It's not like you can jinx it by being happy or exited or even impatient. This WILL happen ;)

YAYAYAYAY! Love the bag - it's gorgeous. Just curious, which date is yours? Ours never made it to the chart while we waited, and since we switched, I stopped trying to understand the danged chart. It is in mathematical analysis, which is the same as ancient Greek to me ;)

And the bag also says, "This is one chic, hip momma who IS a momma. A rockin' momma at that!" :) I heard it.

So, SO happy for you that it is feeling REAL now, after such a long wait.

Awesome!!! And what's a milestone if it isn't 'marked' with something, right? You will always remember when and how and why you got that diaperbag.

So excited for you!! (But for the life of me, I can't figure out that chart...)

lurahloo, I don't have your email, so I hope you see this. I am terrible at statistics, too, but basically - with my limited understanding of All Things Math - the Rumor Queen takes a look at how many people participate in her LID surveys. She calculates how many people have an LID on each day (so, let's say that there are 20 families with an LID on June 13, 2006 - including us - and 9 families with an LID on June 14 and so on). Then she calculates how many families have been referred each month in recent history. Right now, the average each month is somewhere between 50 and 75 families. So... then she looks at the upcoming LID dates and just adds things up. She calculates how many days they'll do by basically stopping on a projected cut-off day when she reaches around 50 total families for that grouping. I'm sure it's more complicated than that, but you get the gist, I hope. If not, just remember that I am absolutely hopeless at All Things Math. *grin*

And yeah, it's like buying Moroccan sconces for a house you hope to get...we did that. It was good.

So happy for you!!! It's so exciting to hear another wonderful family will be united with their little one soon. I love your diaper bag! It's going to look amazing on one arm with your baby on the other. :-)

I have to agree with lurahloo... for the life of me I cannot understand those charts on RQ. It's a good thing I'm not still waiting (LID 8/11/06) because I wouldn't have a clue of how long it would take for my referral to come in. ;-)

Congrats again!!!

It's beautiful (if not exactly frugal)! And now I need to go visit Lisa's blog!!!!

I bought plenty of things waiting for our travel call. Although not even close to 4 years, those months and months with a tiny picture and no travel call were still really hard.

Claudia said...

I did EXACTLY the same thing when we got close. Bought the most expensive bag I could find, because that made it feel so much more real! Crazy, but i totally understand!

How did I miss such an important post. And such great news.

This really is going to happen - as surreal as it is and will seem. And the T will have her sissy. And you may lose your mind (it's temporary....so I hear). All wonderful things.
