More on Melamine

This past weekend I attended an FCC event where I was able to chat with a momma I hadn't seen for quite awhile. She remembered that the Tongginator underwent melamine testing a few years ago because her daughter also received that same melamine testing, including the renal ultrasound. Unfortunately, this momma's daughter - unlike the Tongginator - DID test positive for melamine.

Which makes angry tears well up yet again.

Why, oh, why did they DO this?

Her daughter's kidney stones passed with as little trauma as possible early last year. And everyone, including the doctors, hoped this little girl was in the clear. But now... now they are finding some long-term effects. You see, this little gal's teeth are starting to fall out, only she's not seven-years-old. Nor six. Nor even five-years-old.

She's four.

And her baby molars are falling out: not her front teeth... her MOLARS. Which means that something is wrong. And that something that's wrong was caused by melamine.

You see, melamine causes kidney damage... how much no one knew before because what crazy person ever thought to put melamine in BABY FORMULA before 2003? Or in ANY food for that matter? For all of the children effected, it's very much a wait-and-see kind of thing. Because these little ones are innocent test victims. And kidney damage can cause lots of issues, including a Vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D deficiency equals impeded and/or deformed growth of bones and other parts of the skeletal system, including teeth. Which is why this little girl's teeth are falling out several years early, and not in the order they are supposed to fall out. How many children in China - and Chinese adoptees around the world - will be impacted by greed? How many???

I know the company is bankrupt now. I know. And I know that the Chinese government worked tirelessly to bring justice. I know that, too. But it's not enough.

It will never be enough.

The tears... they keep falling.

Oh sheesh. Oh wow.

And now I'm wondering if Stitch should also be tested.

Lets see, I've typed 4 different comments now and I'm so angry that I'm having to delete them because of the typos!

I just can't imagine the fear that her parents are feeling, the unknown. That's what is so hard for me - when you know something isn't right, something is amiss yet you don't know what that something is or even worse, when you have no idea of how something is going to affect your child and you start second guessing EVERYTHING.

Praying for her and all the little ones.

Hugs,
Carla

Not much to say (due to the anger!) but I'm very sorry for this little 4 yr old and her parents. What next?

So hard to read this post. It sickens me to no end that this ever happened. I read it happened again in China. http://www.shanghaidaily.com/sp/article/2010/201007/20100710/article_442660.htm

Horrific to think how many others will be effected.

our littlest one was also given the melamine laced formula. She tested negative but we are going back for more tests since she is very tired lately...she has low iron, and a vit D deficiency.

I was never able to get MM tested as she showed no symptoms...and you know, government insurance - what Obama care will look like in a few years.

Luckily the kid has been healthy as a horse...which defies all logic with her less than 12 lb self at adoption and her horrid diet.

So far we have been one of the lucky ones.

Morning TM - happy stuff first - the 4th update was super and glad that the Colonel didn't thrum you too hard! ;)

On to Melamine - Our daughter was a victim, and to make us feel worse - ever the caring parents we bought a couple boxes of formula in China and brought them home so that we could 'ease' her transition to US products more gradually (she was extremely delayed functioning as a 6 month old at 18 months - but well caught up now!) - yes - we helped poison our daughter - the story broke about 3 weeks after we got home. We still cringe about that today....

She had 'grit' in her bladder - not nearly as difficult to pass as stones - but (so far) no apparant long term effects.

Our Korean daughter started loosing her teeth at about 2.5 years - we actually had several crowned and a few removed - but the cause was 'pre-natal neglect' - her birth mom 'hid' the pregnancy for about 7 months. Please encourage your friend to have her doctor check into this as a posibility too!

hugs - aus and co.

TM,
How absolutely sad. Thank you for sharing so that we may pray for this family. It is amazing how precious children are no more than a disposable thing, tested on and experimented with in so many parts of the world.

Yes, the Chinese have worked to bring them to justice, but they will never be able to deliver real justice to the victims.

That just breaks my heart!

What kind of person makes a decision to add anything (!!!) to baby formula/food without knowing 100% certain that it's nothing other than nutritious and healthy??? I think it's more than ignorance or even greed... I believe it's purely an evil heart.

R was in that 'pool' of affected kids and tested negative thankfully. I recall being pissed beyond belief about the entire issue...and of coure now I am again. It's good to be angry and outraged...it gets results..but not necessarily for those already impacted. It's a horrible, horrible preventable issue. There are really no words.

What is wrong with the world? Seriously, how could ANYONE feel ok about doing something like this to BABIES?!?!?!?!? I don't care how much money is on the line.

I guess there's really not much to say.

So sad that this little children had to suffer from so many "stupid" things. Makes me sad. I feel the same way about child abuse, I know where did that come from. Since my adopted son was abused it is near and dear to my heart. Why do the innocent have to suffer so much. Thanks for sharing so we can pray for these children. ((((HUGS)))
