Tongue Twist

While reading during homework time yesterday, the Tongginator stumbled over a word, trying to sound it out for a minute or two. When she couldn't quite figure it out, she asked me, "Momma, what's this word?"

As I walked over to check it out, she exclaimed, "Wait... I think I know it... is that 'Tonggu?'" Heh. Although now I'm totally agonizing about how I've completely warped my little Miss T by blogging under the name Tonggu Momma.

Don't worry. My french-educated kids first read it as "tonggu" too, and they've never read your blog. ;)English spelling is terrible! At least our grammar's simple.

Don't agonize! Would it have been any better if you called your blog "Tongue Momma"?!

Quit worrying! She's in Kindergarten and reading Freckle Juice practically on her own. Who cares if she thinks tongue is Tonggu?

And why were you posting at 3AM? This is your mother speaking.

Okay, I now totally heart the Tongginator. :)

A tale to share:
When I was around 6, my teacher wrote "tongue" on the blackboard, turned around and asked if anybody could tell what word that was. I raised my hand and was practically out of my seat in my eagerness to be picked. When the teacher called on me, I proudly stood up and read: tong-GEW.

Heh, heh. And now, I totally heart Tonggu Grammy :)

But no need to agonize. Besides the fact that she is reading Freckle Juice (oh my word! is she really?!), you can tell her it's like pare and pair and pear. Or hare and hair. Or there and their or they're. Or where and wear. You get me :)

After she's finished her doctorate at the tender age of 20, she'll understand the English language and all its inconsistencies . . .

I'm impressed! It DOES say tongoo - in about any other language than ours!

Warped - naw - just 'punny'!

hugs - aus and co.

Great job sounding out what is a nearly impossible language! Who made up all our phonetic rules anyway?
Tonggu works for me, although it is strange in context...

ha! just grinning here.

LOL You're worried about your kindergartener messing up the word tongue? My 6th grader thinks we eat at Rubby Tuesday. And my 11th grader thinks that's Pierce-man cheese we sprinkle over our spaghetti and that her friends attend an Eppi-SCOPP-ull church. (Episcopal)

Who should be worried here??
