A Deep, Dark Secret

Y'all, I must confess something, especially after my post last week detailing my complete and utter inability to create a Christmas list. It's a secret, though, so you have to promise not to mention it to Tonggu Grammy. Or anyone else I know in real life.

Y'all, I DO collect something beyond caffeine and books. But I seriously CANNOT let my family know about it because - if they actually discover my super-secret collection - I will be drowning in the stuff before the decade is over. Because once my family sniffs out a new collector, they drown that poor, besotted collector with her theme until said collector can't remember why she started collecting whatever it was she was collecting in the first place.

Take my Aunt P, for instance. And what I like to call The Rooster Invasion of the 1990's.

I won't bore you with the details of that sad, sad event, except to say that my Aunt P once remarked that she thought she might like roosters because... well, because she didn't know why. But she thought she might like to decorate with them a bit. The rooster population at her house more than quadrupled within six months of her remark. And within two years, she was drowning in roosters.

Here's where I'd like to point out that my Aunt P said she thought she might like roosters.

After The Rooster Invasion of the 1990's, I'm fairly certain that my Aunt P doesn't think that anymore. We can't go anywhere in her house now without bird eyes staring at us. It's fowl, I tell ya... FOWL.

(Sorry... I couldn't resist.)

And - shhh - I collect something as well. I hide them in my dining room because - really - who ever uses their dining room anyway? But y'all? I collect snowmen. And I chose snowmen because I'm lazy. (You totally don't have to take down snowmen until, like, March, instead of the weekend after New Years.)

(I'm totally smart, aren't I?)

I wanted to share with y'all a few of my favorite snowmen. Because I'm totally swamped with Christmasy stuff, knee deep in ribbons and bows, with a brain numb from trying to pound out a non-cheesy Christmas letter. (Are those even possible?) Anyways, here are a few of my favorite snowmen.

And then there's this little guy... he usually shows up on the family Christmas tree rather than amidst my super-secret snowman collection. But that's because he totally deserves a place of honor, front and center, where everyone can enjoy looking at him.

I like to call him Jack O'Snowman. And y'all can pour out your accolades to the artist, a nine-year-old Tonggu Daddy. Jack O'Snowman is a rather shy fellow... no matter where I place him on the tree, he always seems to find his way to the wall side of the Christmas evergreen.

I can't imagine why.

You are the first person I know who collects snowmen. :)

Hey, doesn't Tonggu Grammy read your blog?

I collect snowmen too. They make me smile!

Love your snowmen, especially the "believe" one.

I kind of inadvertently started up a nativity collection - but they're unusual or ethnic so I don't get slot of people inundating me with them . . . which is all good. :)

I have to admit I have a snowman fetish too. Mine stay up through March as well. I knew you and I were kindred spirits...those decorative Ked bridal shoes, sealed the deal.

What a great collection of snowmen! I think your secret is safe... ;-)

I collect nativity sets. I like to have one in every room, but this year they are all in the living room.

I thought you were going to tell us more about your panda collection.

I totally know what you mean! I accidently started collecting snowmen when my church's women's group started an "ornament exchange" each year. I found myself picking my own ornament and hiding it so no one would try to take it from me. When that stopped working I started bringing The Queen to the exchanges. No one dares take anything from The Queen.

BTW, your secret is safe with me. I am also jealouse that you already have Christmas decorations up....

Your secret is soooooooooooo safe with me, but I can't promise that Santa doesn't know now. I'm practically certain that HE reads this blog. And we all know just how generous Santa can be.

I am one of those freaks who have a themed tree....it's snowmen! and everything is blue, silver, and white. Snowmen are cool. No pun intended.

Love the snowmen. So cute. I collect Russian nesting dolls--oddly enough, I NEVER get inundated with those! I always figure, if you have to collect, collect something expensive and hard to get, and then you can be sure of it taking many, many years to grow your collection.

(Oh, and I thought of you last night while watching CBS, when I saw the Hanukkah PSA for the pap. WHO WRITES THESE THINGS????)

I too am a closet collector.
I am rather particular about my hobby and not only would I be overwhelmed with stuff, but if it came from my hubby's side (his mom and sis) it would be the exact opposite of what I like.
So, your secret is safe with me.

I like snowmen, too, and for the same reason as you. However, I'm thinking you've already collected enough snowman that you've already been outted to those who know you well. And, of course as T Grammy has already pointed out, Santa knows these things.

Oh come on - the decade is over in 3 and 1/2 weeks - let the secret out!

Seriously - You have some really good ones in there - and just keep moving Jack back up front!

(and I just couldn't bring myself to comment on yesterdays!

hugs - aus and co.

PS - today's 'fowl' comment and yesterdays "papular vote" - you may not under any circumstances communicate with my bride - if you do both TongguDaddy and I will be buried under punny comments! ;)

Tsk tsk. With all the things I know about you, now I find out that you're a sexist?!? What about snowWOMEN? ;)

I used to collect snowmen too, then word got out.

BTW, I no longer do the non-cheesy letter. I point them to the blog (which, mine is seriously lacking atm). I figure, our whole lives are there. I say just print a page of Tongginator pic's, give them the url and have done with it. :)

Seriously though, good luck.

Cheers, Kiy

I love the snowman plate!! Snowmen are my faves, but I can't really say that I collect anything.

Except maybe...dust.

My MIL likes angels. Or she used to. Several years ago when my FIL first retired, there was this door-to-door junk salesman. As it turned out, my FIL was a major SUCKER. He bought a new angel just about every other day until all empty spots in the house were covered in wings and halos! Wouldn't have been so bad if they weren't TACKY angels, but they were absolutely hideous. It was hilarious. She never said anything but "Thank you!" to him and when they finally moved...well...the all but 5 or 6 of the angels got stuffed into boxes and hidden in the attic. I have a fear that they'll be bequeathed to us!

I went through a giraffe phrase and then through a penguin phrase. I know, pretty random.

Now, I'm overrun with giraffes and penguins which means that my house is decorated a little oddly and randomly.

I should have picked snowmen!!

So with all the snowmen in your diningroom - they still haven't caught on that you collect them? Hmmm........

Cute collection. And your house sounds like mine. Knee deep in everything Christmas. (Gee, too bad we can't leave it all up to make it a bit more worthwhile.)

I especially love the Jim Shore. My Mom collects snowmen too! I have several & like you enjoy the bonus of leaving them up through Feb.!

I collect them too...like you I can keep them up 3 months. Love hubby's ornament : )

I have a huge Santa collection. Last time I counted it was well over 200. But I also have a much smaller snowman collection. I do not put them out until the Santa's are packed away. It helps me do the job of packing because I love the little snowmen. I usually leave them out for a couple of months. I also have one little hand painted one my daughter made 35 or so years ago. I hope they don't flood you with little men.

I love the snowman plate! He looks so thrilled for it to be snowing, and after the winter storm we got, I feel the same way! (Okay, we got rain, the north country got snow, but we needed the rain so much that we were all thrilled!)

I have outlawed the "c" word in our house. No one is allowed to even whisper it because when I was 7 or 8, I mentioned that I liked teddy bears. Well someone in the family decided I was "collecting" them and told everyone else, and from there on out that's all I ever saw -- every birthday, Christmas, graduation, you name it. The teddy bears (which I came to loathe) and teddy bear items poured into the house. I was in college and relatives around the world would still send me teddy bear things. Can you tell I'm still horrified by it? Seriously, I am. No one in my house will ever "collect" anything that the outside world knows about. Ever. Shudder.

Cute collection - that was wise on your part to stick with snowmen...they do last through March ;)

Awww, they are adorable. I love snowmen. I have a mini-collection. Meaning a small amount of them, not that they are diminutive in size. Not that there's anything wrong with being diminutive in size. :)

I also love gingerbread folks. I'd like to collect them, but these kids I seem to be collecting are taking up all the extra space around here! :)

Cute snowmen. I got Malcom's first Christmas ornament from Hallmark yesterday. It's a mommy & daddy snowman holding a baby snowman. (It isn't dated, so you might want to check it out for Tongginator's mei mei.)

Wait, I thought Christmas letters were SUPPOSED to be cheesy. Well, that's the premise we have been operating under for years, anyway. My poor relatives.

I know exactly what you mean about collections and keeping them quiet. One time many years ago, I mentioned (totally in passing) that I like teapots. You can imagine what happened.

Oh, yeah, I was completely bombarded with teapots. Swamped with pots of every size, color, and design, along with saucers and cups. So many, that Bil said we would need to rent a separate apartment for them.

Sadly, they all met their demise last year when inexplicably, the shelf on which they rested came loose from the wall, creating the most enormous teapot carnage ever.

In a very strange twist of events, though, the two surviving pots all had enormous sentimental value: one my grandma gave me before she died and one Bil gave me as a wedding present. Which was really pretty cool.

I did lose my favorite one, though. It was a Boston tea party teapot my brother picked up on his travels in Boston. Oh, well.

Cute snowmen!

I like snowmen too...Michael's has a super cute one in the Mary Engelbright collection of stuff that I was tempted, but since I was buying a TON of ornaments for SIL I thought better of it. ;)

I love that you hang Tonggudaddy's creation on your tree, as it makes me feel better for hanging Dh's...ummm...something Christmasy creation on the tree as well. I think he was 7 though. Some sort of doll with a Christmas present. ;)

and have you seen the Snowman Soup teacher gifts? I'm giving them to the church teachers this year (way too many to actually do more individually thought out gifts).

Love the folksy snowmen :) So cheerful! Good luck with keeping this one secret, though...maybe this is why I don't "collect" anything? :)

My mom doesn't even ask if someone wants to collect something. She told one of her friends, "You're too hard to shop for. You need to collect something. I think you should collect bells." And she gave her several bells.

And she did collect them for years.

I collect angel ornaments. My mom gives me one every year. 'Cept this year, I'm not so in the mood...

My sister collects the snowmen. i get very overwhelmed when I'm at her house.

This one time, in high school, I said I liked Tweetie Bird. UH HUH. I had Tweetie notebooks and keychains and shirts and stuffed animals COMING OUT MY EARS. UGH. I hate that bird. :)

Hope you are having a great holiday season!!

Cute! I love small decorative Christmas trees!!

Oh I totally understand the collection issue...
I decided to put teddy bears in my room - and somehow they took over - I even had a teddy bear LAMP!

When I was in 7th grade I collected pens...I finally stopped getting "cool" pens in my stocking 2 years ago when Santa started filling it at my house instead of my mom's:)

Santas - oh yikes! I decided to do a Santa tree...it lasted about 2 years and I grew tired of it. Amelia STILL gets a Santa ornament in her stocking at Grandmas...Santa seems to fill 2 for her!

I too have a few snowmen - I scatter them throughout the house, mom rarely comes over so we're safe. I'm not normally a Wal-Mart shopper, but last night Amelia and I found the CUTEST solar sidewalk snowman lights, normally 2 for $12 on sale for $5. We bought 4 for near our front steps...They are now buried in the snow - but we'll dig them out tomorrow:)

Oh, TM....have you lost your cotton pickin' MIND? Do you have ANY clue how many adoring fans read your Blog and have Blog O'Mania for you and your blog?

Do you realize that your Snowman population is about to multiply, tripify.....quadrupify......oh, I just hope there's still room for the TD and Little T in the house.

TG completely cracks me up. I would like to adopt her if she's available for part time Granny work....

May I ask...is the TD snowman made from a very special past of Morton Salt? I made a very similar looking one about 35 years ago....and its still standin'

If you were in my family, the next time it snowed you'd find yourself gazing on a lawnful of snowmen...

My brother-in-law had a friend that once received a beaver for his birthday as a child and rather incautiously told his mom that he loved his present so much that he never wanted to receive a different kind of present ever again. He has received at least one stuffed beaver every Christmas and birthday since; which explains why our family has so many stuffed beavers (said friend has given them away far and wide...)

I personally collect frogs, but realized it was getting out of hand in time to curb some of the excesses. I still get a lot of frog themed stuff, which I mostly appreciate ;)

I can't believe you just publicly admitted your collection. Now you will be inundated!!

I had a friend that was once given a 3 Stooges gift He never even said he liked the 3 Stooges, but after he had one, it was assumed that he did. So now his office is FILLED with 3 Stooges posters and paraphernalia. Ugh!

I just bought 39 cent snowman salt shaker for school yesterday. You'd love it. :)
