One Question

We have The Influenza. The Tongginator has a double ear infection as well. We are SICK, y'all. And I've spent all night pondering one question.

Why on earth do grocery and drug stores place their pharmacies in the rear of the building so that deathly ill people have to walk an extra fifty feet to purchase life-saving medicine, but place their cartons of cigarettes right by the front door so that healthy people can more easily kill themselves?

Please explain.

And happy Friday the 13th, y'all. May yours be uneventful. Now excuse me while I vegetate on the couch some more.

My opinion is that they do that because it forces you to drag yourself and your sick child through the entire store, past displays of candy and drinks and popsicles and anything else that you could be suckered into purchasing because your baby feels rotten and you'd do anything to make them comfy and happy. A gallon of Mountain Dew and a vat of ice cream? Sure sweetie!

And (I'm not judging, I'm telling the truth here) the only two serious smokers I know very well...they don't eat much. They smoke and drink cokes. So why make them come all the way into the store?

When you wrote "the Influenza", it immediately made me think of My Fair Lady. Just thought I'd share that.

And "The Source" comment about smokers cracks me up! My mom was a smoker and all she ever did was smoke and drink coffee! So her theory stands.

I'm sorry you guys are so sick. It'll get better soon! Has your hubby been spared? I hope he's taking good care of you.

So sorry you guys are sick. The Source has it right - advertising at its best!

Little T has a double ear infection too but we'd never know. No fever, no fuss. Took her to the docs for what I thought might be hand, foot, mouth but ended up being sand flea bites from school and they said both ears were full! Ugh!

Hope you guys get better soon!

Great questions! When Ethan had the flu 2 years ago, I called our local store and asked that they have lysol, tylenol and kleenex at the drive thru window when I picked up the tamiflu meds. Saved me from going in.

The flu.
May you all recover soonest.

Tm~ sorry you are all so sick. I think the flu went through here, but I didn't get it. My dr. made me get a flu shot this year. I can't imagine why, with 5 small kids and all! LOL Feel better. If I was close by I'd bring you chicken soup!

Sorry to hear you are sick. Feel better real soon.

Ugh, sorry y'all are still sick. I'll go with "The Source" on the reasoning. Sounds good to me.

{Hugs} and feel better soon!

Awwwwwww :( :( this is why we pre-buy any of those meds so we don't' HAVE to visit the store while deathly ill.

And will will have a happy Fri the 13th! It's Marvel Girl's 3rd Homecoming anniversary! ;)

Poor thing! I'm so sorry!
I hate walking back to the back of the pharmacy. Amen, sister!

I'm so sorry you guys are so ill. I know you'll get better very soon and all of this will just be one unpleasant memory.
It's so hard when Momma is sick too. Bless your heart.
I will pray for you today.

Our kids have been sick this week. 16 year old has missed 5 days of school! Oy!

Know that we are thinking of you and wishing you well. Prayers.

I'm so sorry you've been sick and it's lasted so long...hoping you both kick this thing soon!

Happy Friday the 13th, I'm not the superstitious kind. Hope it's an uneventful one too.

Oh, and don't have the answer to your question...I have to agree about dragging your kid through the store theory.

Sending healing thoughts and prayers your way TM....:)

Oh no -- hope you are all feeling better soon! Battling colds and sinusitis at our house. And I agree with the others -- stores want you to have to walk by the toys, candy, etc. and be tempted! And I usually am! Chocolate cures about everything, doesn't it! Have a good weekend!

Soooo sorry you guys have the flu...that really stinks. Hope you're feeling better soon!

And, yeah...gotta agree with "The Source"'s comment above....

Why do men have nipples?

These are questions best left to people much smarter than us. ;)

And those parking spaces near the front of the parking lot - the ones for expectant moms or ill people heading to the pharmacy? Ever find one empty when you need it? Me either. So, you get to walk the extra mile to the pharmacy at the rear of the store AFTER you've traipsed across the entire parking lot, too!

So sorry to hear you're sick. Hope you and T are well soon.

So sorry you're sick! Hope you all feel better soon!

Very good question by the way!

Valarie Lea said...

Ok in this situation you have to follow the money. If the sick people have to walk to the back they infect more people, thus causing more people to buy more medicine. They put the cigs up front so people will by them get sick and then have to buy more medicine. Its a conspiracy.

I am sorry you are all sick. I hope you feel better soon. :)

Patty O. said...

I agree with the Source. They do it so you will have to pass all kinds of stuff that you or your kid might (in your weakened state) decide to buy. It's all about their greed.

I sure hope you guys feel better soon!

Aunt LoLo said...

It's an Evil Plot - they profit margin is higher on pharmaceuticals, so they want you to infect as many people as possible on your way to get your Life Saving medicine!

Either that, or they're idiots. Take your pick.

Feel better soon!!!

Peanut said...

I think Aunt Lolo is right. Definitely benefits them financially if they can get as many customers as possible sick and buying all those expensive meds!

I hope you guys feel better soon!

prechrswife said...

Feel better soon! The flu is no fun. :-( I also think your question makes a very good point, even if I don't know the answer.

T said...

REALLY good question - maybe they're afraid of pharmaceutical robbers getting away too quickly (but cigarettes - whatev...)

Half Gaelic, Half Garlic! said...

WOW...you have it bad. So sorry you all are so sick.

As for the smokes in the front and the medicine in the back.....I am guessing it is all about marketing.

Try to have a good weekend...get some rest!

Heather of the EO said...

OH NO!!! GET WELL PEOPLE! I believe it's a good idea that you LISTEN to me!

I've always pondered this same question. And I assume that people who need sick meds HAVE to HAVE them and MUST walk by all the other products and they might pick up some Peeps or a rubber bands on their way by. But people who NEED smokes can ONLY think about smokes. Or something.

Ick. Here's to renewed health soon!

And doesn't Walgren's or someone like that have a drive-thru pharmacy?

Kayce said...

So sorry you guys are feeling crapy! Hope you're able to relax this weekend and get better.

Feel better soon. The flu is awful and I can't imagine having a double ear infection with the flu.

Good question, but I have no answers.

Stonefox (otherwise known as Heidi) said...

So sorry to hear about the "bug" invading your house. This is actually a really good question that maybe the store has SOME good reason for, because it certainly isn't good for the sick ones, is it?

Lanxi said...

It's bad enough having a child sick, but when you are too.....YUCK!

Get some rest and snuggle time on the couch - and find someone else to run to the store.

OziMum said...

Oh no! Hope your drugs work, and you're all fit and healthy in no time?!!!

((Hugs)) ~ don't ya love cyber hugs?! Absolutely no risk of infection!!

Oh I am so sorry. Everyone has been crazy sick!
Hope you're feeling better soon. And it's all about marketing my friend!

Oh, no! I am so sorry you guys are sick!! Feel better sooo soon!! Good point about the pharmacies!

That is an excellent question. And one I don't have the answer for.

I am so sorry you are all sick. After coming off of almost a month of sickness myself, I can totally empathize.

Feel better soon!

Beach Mama said...

I am so-o-o sorry you are sick!! The FLU just left our house this week. UGH! What a miserable time. As far as your question goes, I think it is because in your delirious state of sickness, you will mill around and place unnecessary items in your cart while you wait for the meds to be filled in the pharmacy. Smokers aren't going to buy anything else but cigs.

Missy said...

Sorry you girls have the flu, too! It really stinks, huh? I just detest this bug. Little 24 hour things I can handle, but geesh, we are creeping up on a week.

Great point about the pharmacists and cigs...never thought about that, but excellent point.

Drink lots of fluids, get lots of rest and FEEL BETTER!

I don't have the answers you seek but do wish you well. We've been there. There was one year where four of us had the flu at the same time. We lived on the pull-out sofa in the family room. Whoever was feeling the best at the moment was the one in charge of doling out medicine and drinks. What a long few days.

I hope you are back up to par soon.

Janet said...

I think you gave it to US through your blog. Thanks a lot. :-)

Kristy said...

You know I have never thought about that, but it is so true!!!

I hope you both are feeling better very very soon.

Love, Kristy

To give you the chance to infect as many people on your way back as possible. They sell more that way!
