The Infamous Afro

I believe I've mentioned my Seventh Grade Afro on more than one occasion. And I know that I have yet to show y'all a photo of it. That's because - during my teen years - I felt so humiliated by my hair history, I threw away all photos of me from that time of my life.

All except one.

It's not that great of a photograph. My momma also snapped this shot a full six months after the infamous perm, so my hair was definitely in the recovery stages of my disastrous experiment. It's no longer an afro, exactly, but I also don't quite have the words to describe it.

Maybe y'all can take a shot at it...

yes, I realize there is PLENTY to make fun of, even without viewing the face

For more photos that will NEVER find their way into the pages a scrapbook, check out Sincerely Fro Me To You at We Are THAT Family.

Ahh... the era of the pearls. With every outfit. For every occasion.

The hair's not so bad!

Blessings!

You look like an 80's TV news anchorwoman. :)

Plaid again? Was this a favorite of yours?? And the double strand of pearls... WOW.
I am SO glad I don't have any pictures of myself from the early 1990's (at least I don't think I do...) so I can giggle at yours.
The hair? Reminds me of a fluffy Dorothy Hamil.

Is that by any chance a plaid sweater dress?? Because I had a rockin' blue plaid sweater dress that I wore to it's death back in the day. With a big bow holding back my hair. Which was also the product of bad chemicals and questionable judgement. Do you remember how middle aged people would just shake their heads and cluck their tongues at our "fashion" choices...and we thought they had no clue??? It really hurts to admit they knew what they were talking about, doesn't it??

At least we were all in it together, my firend...

That sweater/sweater dress is remarkably like one I owned too! And I agree that the hair isn't that bad... but, bear in mind I had long hair in a spiral perm and those HUGE teased bangs....

Um, how about the Premature Mom-Fro. Twenty years too early, but manageable and flirty all the same...

oh my! The pearls, not the hair!

That sweater leads me to believe The Cosby Show is missing a character.

Holy Cow, I had the EXACT same haircut when I was younger. Then, I moved on to super big Aquanet hair. I think you look cute in an 80s way.

No way, I think the hair is very eighties Princess Di. The pearls might be throwing me though. She was a fashion ICON, so maybe were you. Plaid skirts, big hair, pearls :)!

I may or may not have snickered heartily at this photo...

Until I remembered some of my own junior high photos.

Hahaha. That totally reminds me of a picture of my oldest sister. The hair, the sweater. But seriously. I feel your pain. I had THE worst hair growing up (not that it's all that great now!). I had an all-natural afro. And I wouldn't let my mom brush my hair (at least that's what she says...), so it was even worse. If you don't believe me, check this out: http://the-beth.blogspot.com/2006/04/photo-essay-of-singer-family-circa.html I'm the one in the DARE t-shirt.

Girl, there's not anything to make fun of here. ;) You should see MY photos from this time period, and I couldn't throw them all away because I had NATURALLY curly hair. Yeah. No recovery stage except for growing it out long and hoping it would "tame down" some.

Umm...you have a nice neck? ;-)

The hair isn't so bad...but I'd love to see the REST of that outfit!

Yes, I think it's a nice photo ... well the pearls were a little much .. but still ...

I was expecting a lot worse after that intro...but I'm sure this isn't a style you'd go for today, LOL!

That isn't THAT bad! I think you should wear it like that again....he he he....

I had a sweater like that. And pearls like that. Except mine were PINK! Tee hee.

I had a horribly similar hair experience. I'm hoping all copies of my sophomore year school photo have been destroyed, but I'm afraid a few of them still exist.

Wow, Stefanie was harsh, getting on your plaid & pearls - WOW. I think I had the same hairdo. I would get it cut & then if I didn't like it cut it shorter. No flat irons back then either.....

OK! I gotta admit, I was laughing BEFORE I even saw the picture. You're a hoot!

Gail said...

Oh that do. It's kind of a fluffy relaxed afro. LOL! I cringe when I think of my hair in the 80's. Those pics of me are great blackmail material.

It looks like my mom's hair. She's had this style for about 25 years!!!

I tried a perm once. Around 7th grade. It didn't stick. Then I chickened out and didn't ever try again...

I totally had pearls too, but no plaid sweater dresses.

I think we have all experience the bad perm. I did it in the ninth grade - sigh. I looked like a poodle.

I don't think it is that bad at all!! We all kind of looked like that....pearls and shoulder pads included...lol!!

Nothing was as biad as the fro I had! This is an awesome haircut compared to mine. :)

ahhh, and my hair crisis was my mom forcing me to cut it from waist length to chin length. i might still be scarred. lol
i'm simply amazed that you have this many old photos of yourself to do the fro me to you meme... i have NO photos of myself as a kid or preteen. which on one hand is kinda nice, and on another makes me kinda sad!

I assure you, this is not as bad as it could have been!!! I shudder to think of what my hair looked like during the 80's and early 90's! Maybe one day I'll scan my scrapbook pages and join you in the self-embarrassment!
