Understanding...

During bath time earlier this week (and yes, we used soap, Grandfather)...

TONGGINATOR: Momma, I'm a Chinese person.

TONGGU MOMMA: I know you are... you're Chinese-American.

TONGGINATOR: No, Momma. I'm a Chinese person - for REAL.

TONGGU MOMMA: Yes, honey. I know. You're a - for real - Chinese person.

TONGGINATOR: No, Momma... FOR REAL.

TONGGU MOMMA: Of course you are. You're a FOR REAL Chinese person.

TONGGINATOR: No. I mean I only speak Chinese now.

TONGGU MOMMA: Oh... you mean you can't speak English? You only speak Chinese?

TONGGINATOR: Yes. Fu shui zi bu mei. (don't bother trying to understand it... she doesn't know what it means either, despite knowing some Mandarin)

TONGGU MOMMA: Oh... so you only speak Mandarin now? Okay then.

TONGGINATOR: Bu shi ding si er yi. (more nonsense and then...) Ni jiao shen me ming zi? ("What is your name?" in Mandarin)

TONGGU MOMMA: Wo jiao Tonggu Momma. ("My name is Tonggu Momma." in Mandarin)

TONGGINATOR: (sigh) Momma, you aren't supposed to understand me!

Maybe you need to go back and read the notebooks left in your stocking:).
This was hilarious, but then your blogs are always funny.
Take care.

That's funny, just yesterday Chaislyn told said " you have blue eyes mommy, I have blue eyes too" I told her she has brown eyes, but she didn't seem to catch that.

She is one smart cookie!! Ellie tried to tell me one time in Mandarin that she was not going to eat something...she was so shocked that I understood her...it was priceless.

That is too funny! My neice and nephew (adopted from Korea) never learned Korean but became quiet proficient at German. Too fun to watch these two Korean teenagers speaking German so their parents couldn't understand them!

HA! Too cute. My girls are learning Spanish in school (um, we live north of the boarder) - they totally confuse Spanish and Chinese all the time.

Next time, just play along mom!!!

If all my babies weren't asleep right now, the laughter would be RINGING from the rooftops! I can't wait until BBJ can make up her own games.

She makes up her own language now....but we get in trouble if we DON'T understand! (She told me this morning that she was going to "gun panda." After my sleuthing, it was determined that she wanted to WATCH KUNG FU PANDA. Now, why didn't she just say that in the first place?!)

T is just a riot!

BTW, your skills are pretty impressive. Do you want to travel to China with us? I could use a good interpreter. By the time we go, I figure I'm going to have a limited language of a 3-year old. (I take Mia to her class.) I hope "D" doesn't want me to count past 10. :)

I think my Maya and your Tongginator would get along beautifully.

Maya and I have had China talks recently too. My answers may as well have been in Mandarin--even in my native language, I'm afraid I don't choose quite the right words.

The Tongginator sounds like a darling girl.

That's funny! I never learned to speak tagalog (my parents' native language) but could understand it. That proved hard for my parents to have "private" conversations. I really wish I knew another language.

What a cutie!
The best thing about learning French as a teenager was talking with my brother at the dinner table and making our parents wonder what we were saying!
She's getting a head start!

How adorable. And she could be the envy of the whole preschool age group - they all want their parents not to understand them.

Trust me, Tongginator...in a few short years your mama won't understand a thing you say OR do!
