Got Lifebook?

It's time for my yearly guilt trip er... reminder er... confession. Several years ago I made the Tongginator a toddler lifebook, but I have yet to complete her "big book" that tells the whole known story of her life prior to adoption. It's mostly written, but the chaotic pile of papers sits in a drawer alongside a mess of photographs and scrapbook supplies.

I totally need to get it done. How about you? Have you created your child's lifebook yet? The Tongginator's toddler book will get her through at least age six or seven; however, I'm hoping to be pretty busy during 2010 (LID June 2006), so this is THE year for the big book.

But I totally need some help. Because I am... you know... hopeless. Ahem.

I decided to head over to Asia Lifebooks because I know most of the moderators there from the now defunct China Lifebooks... a few of them are friends, including Kay Graap, who isn't a blogger, but manages to be pretty cool anyway. Membership cost me $5 for the year, but I received a downloadable PDF file of Kay's updated Lifebook Writing Guide; plus all proceeds from the membership dues go to charities that help orphan children in Asia improve their quality of life.

The group already has over 250 members, including people like Margie of Third Mom and Shirley of China Digital Scrapbooks. They've adopted children from Korea, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, India and Kazakhstan. This crowd of ladies (let's be honest, 99.9% of the time it's the moms, isn't it?) will spend the year chatting about lifebook content, organization tips for the mess of papers that sits in my Drawer of Shame and other stuff I'm too ignorant to know about yet. Because... you know... I only just joined the group.

How about you? What's your plan for getting that lifebook done, Done, DONE?

Hmmm...no lifebooks here, but I didn get a gold star from the pediatrician once for The Oldest's baby book. He said he'd never seen a mom write so much about a child. Unfortunately, the same doesn't hold true for the other three kids. There are about oh, 11 years worth of photos in huge totes waiting to be put in albums one day when life settles down! Poor twins. I think I did write their birthdate down somewhere!

I gave up on the lifebooks ~ all the stuff I bought from the scrapbook store is now coming handy on my daughter's school projects.

I've relegated my kids lives to two big plastic bins from Target.

The bins have nice labels though

No life book here, and no bins either, I think there are some pictures in a box, in the basement somewhere.....

BTW, google reader says you just posted this 21 min ago, however looking at your comments and the times they came in, that info is clearly wrong.... wonder why that happenes sometimes?

Didn't know about the Lifebook. Just planned on publishing our blog while we over in China. Do you think that would count?? ;-)

I want to a Lifebook for Tate but as of yet not done a thing.... I will join the group. I guess the most important it for the life book is to have gone to China and returned with Tate. MUST GET STARTED!!

I completely understand. I NEED to get a toddler life book done for Briana. Desperately. I am a member of the group and between Christmas and ear infections, I haven't even thought about it. I must get to work on it!!!!

I finished my kids about 1.5 years after they came home. I wanted to include their finalization, which took almost a year. I used those photobook sites (like snapfish, but I used whatever offered the best deal at the time). It was soooooooo long and painful, but I'm so glad I did it.

My daughter just said the other day something about her birth-omma that she remembers from her book.

Oh, and also, when I ordered the books I made, I ordered THREE! One for the child now, one for me to keep forever, and one for the child when he/she is older (in case the one for now got ruined accidentally).

I bought a "lifebook kit" from a girl who is in the batch before us. She owns a graphic design business. But it doesn't have any guidelines or anything!! Its all paper (really cute paper though)!!

I definitely want to make a life book... when our bundle of sweetness comes home ~ I'm sure there will be very little time to be making lifebooks though?!!!

I have a good friend that has done this for both of her adopted children and it is amazing. She has covered everything about their countries from types of money with the actual money (paper and coin) in the book.

Of course, that is her and not me! My girls have nothing but our little blog and I am quite sure that is all they will have;)

I have a tote of shame in my closet - I did put together a photo album right when we got back from China that we've used for Amelia's story - This summer I actually got a Shutterfly book done with her story, but of course she wants nothing to do with it.

I used one of the "fill-in-the-blank" variety, and I'm sure there are pages that I need to update now that Mary Joyce is older. I put a lot of it together sitting in the waiting room at the lab during the 3 hour glucose test I had to do when I was pregnant with Katherine. I knew that I had to get that book done before baby sister's arrival. That said, I would like to do one using iPhoto, and one day I may actually be able to get that accomplished...I hope...

I am doing a scrapbook style book on Snapfish for Adam and Jeane. Well, I'm working on it right now. Hopefully it will be done before they're 20.

I had to laugh at your 'drawer of shame.' I have a 'file of shame.' I am embarassed to say I have not made a lifebook for my now 6 year old daughter. I was a member of that China Lifebook yahoo group and got some great ideas and have all kinds of stuff in the file. Right around the time I was going to start Grace's book...Will's referral came totally out of nowhere. And...uh I've been a little busy in the last 6 months or so since his arrival. Now I need to do 2 Lifebooks. 1 for Grace, 1 for William. Someday.

I am exactly where you are right now...toddler lifebook done...yes, I know you know ;) And everything for the "big" one is written but nothing formally compiled. I haven't joined the new group yet...I don't know, why since I really enjoyed ChinaLifebooks so much...& once upon a time even moderated a few times! ;)

You've put a bee up my bonnet now...lol!

I don't have Katie's done yet either. I have a little shutterfly book done for her with pictures and a basic story that she likes to look at. We were going to meet once a month with my local adoption group to work on it. We never did it. I have to get it done.......

Well, I could have written this post as I am in the exact same position as you!!! The toddler lifebook is done and quite sufficient for a while. The older version...I have had all of the writing done for a while and have some of the pages done and it all sits in a big pile...while I wait for time to get it done....and I wait...and I wait. lol!

This sounds interesting. Since I have plenty of time to research and plan one... maybe I'll join, too.

Eventually. I mean, I am a classic procrastinator after all.

Create a Lifebook for my four kids. Honey, they are lucky I created a meal for them today. You gotta be happy with what you get around here.
