Ballerinas Are Short, Right?

I totally don't mean to perpetuate the stereotype that all Asian-American girls are short tiny and petite. Because... you know... not all of them are! The Tongginator's bestest friends, twin sisters Cinnamon and Spice, are in the 98th percentile for height and the 75th percentile for weight on the American charts.

The AMERICAN charts, y'all.

Cinnamon and Spice tower over the Tongginator physically, although the Tongginator more than makes up for any shortage with her overflowing personality. Still, many of you yesterday asked me to post photos of the Tongginator from her Christmas pageant. Now y'all know that I rarely share face shots of the Tongginator on the blog (typically only ones rendered unrecognizable), but I also realize I can't throw down a "Don't I look bee-you-ti-full?" comment and then proceed along my merry way.

I tried to get a decent shot of the Tongginator. She was standing in the second row... behind a row of students one year younger... on a four inch riser. And I TRIED to get a decent shot. I truly did. But all I got was this:

And also this:
Remember...she's standing on a four inch riser!

This same thing happened last year. And so I face a choice - I can grow perturbed each and every year during the all-important Christmas and Spring School Programs because - sigh - I can't even see my child's eyes. Or I can simply shrug my shoulders and laugh.

I think I'll choose the laughing. Because I SO don't need an ulcer.

In order to pacify y'all, however, I shall share a few photos of my Tongginator's infamous Back-Of-The-Head, taken this week during her ballet and tap combo class.

Now doesn't she look absolutely bee-you-ti-full?

Very beautiful indeed!

Sorry you couldn't see her face behind the Amazon children. LOL!

Briana is heading for tall and thin I think. I noticed that she was taller than all the kids her age at the potluck on Sunday.

SO beautiful!

Yeah, all you can do is laugh but I think I'd be perturbed! Yep, I'd be way pissed! You want to be able to see your bee-you-ti-full daughter like everyone else and they should be aware that she is petite and cannot be seen. Me thinks that we will be having this same problem when Little T goes to school - she's so small. And knowing me, if they stick her behind some amazon kids I'll be walking right up there during the show and moving her! hehe....

She really is bee-you-ti-full!! Ahh..the hair - can't wait for T's to grow in like that. Seems to be taken forever. Big T said if her hair grew like her fingernails it would be down to her butt by now!

We are headed out to the mountais so if I don't stop by before Christmas - have a very Merry Christmas!!!

Yes, she's gorgeous! Short people are awesome...just ask me. They're also incredibly talented, funny, AND smart.

She is a cutie! Love her in her dance class - actually dancing - Amelia just stands and looks at herself in the mirror!
The short thing is hard, I was always tall, and Amelia keeps asking me if she'll be tall like me, I keep telling her she'll be tall like Grandma, who is 5-2"
Soon she'll speak up on her own and tell the teach she wants to be in front:)

It is frustrating when you can't see them at concerts. Love her ballet picutres - with 3 boys I don't have any of those.

Oh, she is beautiful! I can relate to the petite-ness. No, not me PERSONALLY--I wish. My twelve year-old (non-Asian) daughter just had her well-child check-up today and she went from the 3rd percentile in weight down to not-even-on-the-chart. Maybe I'll try her on the Chinese growth chart and see where she falls. Anyway, the sad thing is that despite having absolutely NO body fat, the doctor said she's in "Stage 2 puberty". I almost cried. My daughter gave me a thumbs-up. "Wow! I must have skipped stage one!" She's always been advanced.

as the 4'11" mom of two sweet petite ballerinas I hate to break it to you... the REAL ballerinas - yep, they're tall too... at least taller than what my girlies have any hope of becoming!

but height aside - she is bee-you-ti-full indeed!!! Those silly teachers REALLY need to get a clue and put the Amazon kids in the back! And no... frankly I don't feel bad for the Amazon kids' parents who can't get the "perfect" camera angle.

On a little tirade of my own here in your comment box aren't I? Well - since I'm already dominating - why is it that it's socially acceptable for other parents to say to me "oh, your kids are all so cute and short?" (really, aside from the littlest tiny one they're all average) but I get the queerest looks when I retort with "oh, actually your kids are freakishly tall aren't they?" (no, I don't really say that - I just WANT to)

Merry Christmas - it's out of my system now :)

Love the pictures, and if all of the kids are performing the same material, why not arrange them by height? That would make sense, though...

Jamie said...

Yes, she is beautiful. Too bad she got stuck behind some tall girls (tall girls! hrmpf!). Not that you'll ever have to worry about the Tongginator fading into the background. :)

Mamatini said...

Well, as an "Amazon kid", I hated being stuck in the back every. single. time. What, I'm not good enough to be in the front row?

Still, I am now the Amazon Mama to two little ones, and yes, while it would be nice to get the perfect camera angle, I'm glad placement decisions (whatever they may be) are made on more than just height issues.

And since your Tongginator has a personality much like my Tongginator, I have no doubt they WILL BE SEEN no matter where they are. :D

Yes, she is so bee-you-ti-full. I love the dance pictures. I was always the amazon and way self-conscious of it.

CC said...

Those dance pictures are precious!!!

She is just so full of butterfly energy. And flexible to boot!

sorry about the height thing. Professor X was the 2nd smallest kid in his class until he was in high school (including girls). Now he's 6 feet tall. So, things change ;)

and one of our best friends (son to two short people) is 1/2 Korean. He is 6'7"! And his two sisters are 6' as well! So not all Asians are small....

I am there with my 2nd child and fully expect to be there with Katie...who if you double her height at age 2 can expect to be AT MOST 5'2" (maybe?), although she's finally growing so there's hope!

Yes, Tongginator is beautiful! I love her pigtails, I mean jealously love those pigtails! Katie's hair just is NOT growing. Okay, it IS, but it's like 1/8 of inch every 6 months.

No question. She is definitly beautiful!
